Asheville custom furniture maker Appalachian Designs builds quality handmade wood furniture, log stairs, rustic railings and more, bringing out the beauty of sustainable materials. Guided by your vision and the unique characteristics of the natural materials we use, each piece of rustic furniture, each log stair and railing system we create becomes a one of a kind – able to be appreciated and enjoyed for generations to come. Appalachian Designs uses all native materials, including locust, hickory, rhododendron and also a wide variety of sawn materials from unique trees and reclaimed materials.

2013 marked our 20th anniversary at Appalachian Designs. Much has changed during that time – but not the fact that every piece of rustic furniture is made to order and built with each customer in mind. Drawing inspiration from his clients and from his surroundings in Western North Carolina, owner Lang Hornthal delights in helping clients achieve the look that they desire in their homes. Lang’s ability to bring their ideas to life and help them complete their homes on schedule with remarkable railings and stairs is a rewarding experience for the Asheville craftsman as well as the homeowners.

Lang is committed to raising the awareness of sustainable forestry in the region. In 2010, he started Root Cause. Just as people recognize the value of buying local food, Root Cause emphasizes the importance of local forest products and the benefit they can have on the Western North Carolina economy. Equally important is the mindful use of these natural resources of the region.
